Newly Qualified Drivers

Recognising the need for newly qualified drivers to understand the limitations of their newly acquired skills, we set up a series of events in schools for sixth form pupils who’d recently passed their driving test.

In partnership with Police Service for Northern Ireland (PSNI), Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) and Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) these events provided learning opportunities to improve road safety knowledge and enhance driving skills. They featured:

  • on-road driving assessments,
  • manoeuvrability tests,
  • road-safe and wellbeing exhibitions, and
  • simulated fatal car crash.

Some were cross-border events with support from Garda Siohana and Donegal County Council.

We’ve included presentations at some of these events from the emergency services and by the father of a teenage driver who had tragically lost her life in a car collision.

There were 9,737 casualties on NI roads last year...
