Road Safe NI Charity are delighted to launch the new GREEN CROSS CODE VIDEO, the first of a series of educational videos aimed at children.

Video Aimed at Key Stage 2

The video is aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 11 years old. The new educational resource is the cumulation of months of work by the charity, Road Safe NI, after we secured funding from the Department of Infrastructure’s (DFI’s) ‘Safe Travel Grant Scheme’.

The educational video is a modern spin on a television advertisement from the 1980s but the subject is more relevant now than it was back then, given the sharp rise in the volume of traffic in recent years and the increase in children using the road for exercise such as walking and cycling. Road Safe NI believe it is now more important than ever, that children are reminded of the dangers on our roads and learn to cross the road safely.  Children are one of the most vulnerable road user groups but with education, they can reduce the risks. The video offers practical advice and demonstrates how to cross the road safely.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)

Road Safe NI hope the video will enhance childrens learning; teaching the rules of the road so children can become aware of dangers and can protect themselves when out. Children are interested in playing video games because they are more engaging, fun and interesting. The same methodology applies to educational videos, where children easily grasp subjects and remember them for a long time and research suggests that technology enhanced learning has been shown to increase retention of information.

Educational Resource for Schools
The videos will be useful resources for all road safety educators to utilise in presentations/lessons and can be used in conjunction with already developed resources.

Road Safe NI have engaged with schools for many years to promote road safety and know that learning materials need to be interactive and we believe this free to all video will certainly enhance the learning experience and will go hand in hand with our recent publication “Street Smart Road Safe” booklet that we are currently distributing to all primary schools across Northern Ireland.

Partnerships – Working Together Saves Lives

Road Safe NI could not have produced the video without the support of the Department of Infrastructure (DFI). The majority of Road Safe NI programmes are delivered in partnership with key road safety stakeholders.  Road Safe NI would like to thank the Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) for hosting the launch of the video at Enniskillen Castle.  Thank you to Slack Press Productions for producing the video https://www.slackpress.co.uk/

Road Safe NI truly believe that ‘Working Together Saves Lives’.

Road Safe NI would encourage all primary schools and partners to get involved in this project and use the video as an educational resource during road safety education classes and workshops.
